My New Year's Resolutions for Health, Fitness, and Happiness

3-2-1- Happy New Year!!  I hope everyone had a safe and amazing New Year's Eve.  Me?  I stayed home but spent the night watching movies in front of the fireplace and texting with/talking to my family.  I even got to wish people a Happy New Year multiple times across a few different time zones!

So far 2017 has been pretty uneventful though that's not necessarily a bad thing.  However, that is gleefully about to change.  In just a few short days, I will be leaving for Orlando to run my very first FULL marathon... in Disney World!!  Due to my failed attempt to complete it last year (I got injured early on and had to drop out at mile 13.4), I've basically been training for this race for a year and a half now.  I am SO excited to cross that finish line on Sunday after running 26.2 miles for Kellsie's Hope Foundation in honor of those who can't in the happiest place on Earth!

Anyway, on to the main point of this post: my New Year's resolutions!  I have 3 main challenges for myself this year.  That may not seem like many, but I'm hoping they will be year-long, life-changing goals for me.  So here we go:

HEALTH- First up, EAT CLEANER!!  I started eating better over the past year, but I haven't yet committed to it fully and with all of my recent traveling for the holidays, my body is paying the price for my frivolity.  My biggest intention for the coming year is to eat and drink cleaner and healthier.  I will continue drinking my nuun and water but try to cut back on the soda and sweet tea.  I will also try to eat more whole foods and cut back on the sugar.  I don't have any plans to follow a specific diet (those always seem to backfire on me!) so I'm going to have to rely on my own brains and motivation... wish me luck!

FITNESS- My second resolution is to improve my fitness by working to increase my strength and running speed.  I would love to get a new PR at the Wrightsville Beach Half Marathon in March (I got a PR there last year as well!), conquer the infamous Laurel Hill in the Tar Heel 10 Miler, and I MIGHT try for the Rock n' Roll Las Vegas Full Marathon in November... it does take place on my birthday weekend after all. :)  I plan to find a good half marathon training plan for increasing speed and I will aim to build more strength training into my weekly workouts.

HAPPINESS- Finally, this year I am resolving to find more happiness in the daily things I do and experience.  I am at a point in my life where I feel ready for a change and though I can't entirely control where my my life goes, I can control how I react to it.  I have a lot to be thankful for: a wonderful family, good friends, a steady job, and my own health.  I plan to use a journal this year to chronicle all of the things I have to be thankful for and happy about.  Plus, I'm running a marathon in Disney World in less than a week... how could I not be happy about that?!?

Well there you have it, my 2017 resolutions.  I'm posting them publicly here on my blog in the hopes that it will help keep me accountable.  What are you resolving to achieve in 2017?  Happy New Year and as always, Happy Running!

  1. Love your blog. I would say of your three goals, the happiness one is by far the most important, and sometimes the hardest to achieve.

    1. Thanks Ruth! I agree, that last one will be the toughest since it's more mental than physical... but I am resolved to make it happen! Happy New Year!!
